bye bye summer

Well ladies and gents, it's the end of the summer, and that means making jam! I love this time of year, all the fruits on the trees and the hedgerows filling up. I've been making greengage jam, from the tried-and-tested, sugar-stained recipe from my grandmother's copy of the Glasgow Cookery Book. Do you have any rituals for the end of summer?

I love the Glasgow Cookery Book! I have the most recent edition which I adore but then I was lucky enough to be given a copy from 1920 with someone's notes written in the margin and in the back of the book in impeccable hand writing. It's one of my prized possessions!

Bymyfairhand - that sounds lovely! My grandma's is a sorry sight, covered in splatters of cake batter and the covers are long gone. I was thinking of getting it re-bound for my mum as a present.

Alessandra - it's marrow and ginger tonight!
