This is the catalogue from the Royal Academy exhibition 'Building the Revolution', which I saw at the end of last year (it's closed now, it wasn't open for long). It was a fantastic show, nicely demonstrating the parallels between Constructivist drawings and the exciting architecture of the period (sort of what I wrote my dissertation on). The catalogue too is very nicely done, and at the end there is the postcard that I grabbed, of my favourite (and previously unseen) piece - 'Design for Loudspeaker No. 7' Gustav Klutsis, 1922.

What I made for my mother - her diary is always jam-packed and bursting at the seams by June, so I got a small ring binder and some punched lined paper from paperchase, printed the diary pages myself and added lots of pockets, envelopes and pouches for all the receipts, notes and who-knows-what that will be stuffed into it over the year! The idea is that she can get herself refills if she needs more paper in there. I decorated the important days (my birthday especially...) and finished it off with black elastic, taped and glued for double strength at the back.

One of the reasons I have so many is that I what I really want is to put them on necklaces, but haven't worked out how to make hole in them yet. I found this fabric at a flea market a few weeks ago and have been turning it into a few scarves. I wanted to try a new design - something that could fill that cold little gap at the front but not be too bulky at the back of the neck, under the coat collar. I think it works well, it's a big pleat that fastens with poppers at the back (last 2 pics). Will be in the shop soon.

In a rather extravagant move, having decided that I needed a digital radio, I sort of accidentally bought the most lavish one available... and it's great! I've had my eye on them for a few years after all. Being a Roberts it should last a good while, and the sound is great. The only tricky bit was deciding which colour to go for, which Amazon solved for me by having the duck-egg blue the cheapest for some reason. Can't wait to take this bad boy on picnics!

Today Sarah made brioche and I made jam - a bit of damson, and a bit of blackberry and apple. We picked them in the garden of the house we will be moving to at the end of the month, where hopefully I can finally settle into somewhere!

The blackberries were huge and just so juicy. What with all the mental weather this summer everything is very early, fruit-wise. Freaky deaky but yummy. I think I gave you my favourite jam recipe once before, long ago in another kitchen!

Sorry for lack of posts, I've been very busy at work and had a bit of a chest infection. I've been re-thinking things with regards to the shop - I'm thinking that perhaps I'd like it to be more of an outlet for occasional items that I can really enjoy making in my own time; it's become less fun squeezing it all around full time work. Does that make sense? Anyway, I'm thinking of winding it down a bit, taking it back to being more of a hobby.

In the fine tradition detailed here, a recent project that I'm rather pleased with was to turn a very very long fine knit cardigan that I never wore into two useful pieces of clothing. Of course, the vintage doilie bits got involved as well.

The skirt I am particularly pleased with; it hangs very nicely and is quite flattering. I simply rolled and hand-stitched the raw top edge before threading elastic through and tying in a knot which I tucked into the tube. Hand-stitching seemed the way to go to avoid any trouble with stretching.

Rummaging around having a clearout, I came across a pouch of old photos that I took on a lomo 4 frame camera that I got off ebay for 13p. (!) Judging from the box, it was made in the 80s, felt like a very very light and flimsy plastic box, and didn't seem to be functioning quite right as you can see above - most didn't come out and those that did were very over-exposed. Still, a bit of fun! I like the colours in this set.

This poor tangle of broken old beaded necklaces has been sitting in my mum's jewellery box, and now my little drawer, for years. They have a rather lovely tribal thing going on, and I've been wanting to fix them up somehow and wear some of them for ages. Fixing the whole thing would be a mammoth threading task, but I've got a few strings done and a little extra necklace so that I can wear Grandma's beads again.

I've just come across the work of Niki Pilkington, and am really impressed by her use of colour and really good treatment of fabric and clothing (I believe her degree was fashion illustration-related). There is also some work using blue biro, which I think looks fantastic. Go check it out! Really nice sensitivity to line.

Today I am mostly loving the little arrow shapes formed by the hemp twine on these rather snazzy bracelets by hippiekingdom. Good colours, too.

PS I've re-made my portfolio site and I must say I'm rather pleased with it. What do you think?
